Each individual who wants the right to vote has to complete a voter registration card by the specified date prior to the actual date that voting takes place. As a voter shows up at the polls to exercise their right to vote they are marked off of a list. This process is to ensure that only registered voters are participating and to keep track of who shows up to vote. This way each person is only able to vote one time as outlined by the constitution.
The specific requirements for voter registration vary by state but there are some basic ones that span across all states. North Dakota is the only state that does not require voter registration. Individuals must be 18 in order to vote but a person can register to vote at the age of 17 as long as they will turn 18 within 90 days. This is to ensure they will be of legal voting age by the time that day comes.
Individuals have to be a citizen of the state in which they plan to vote though. If you are already registered in one state you need to let them know you have relocated before you can register in the new state.
In most states any individual who has been convicted of a felony or who is considered to be mentally incompetent is not eligible to vote. Some states allow felons to restore their right to vote upon successfully completing all the turns of their sentence including probation and parole.
There are many ways in which you can complete your voter registration. You can conveniently fill it out when you renew your driver’s license. This is an easy place to do it because most individuals have to get a new driver’s license after they turn 18. You can ask for a form to be mailed to you from your county clerk’s office. This is generally the location where you renew your license plates.
In most states you have the option of completing the voter registration form online. There are several community organizations that help individuals to fill out the form if they need assistance. There is no cost for obtaining a voter registration form. It is important to have one on file in the state where you reside. This way you can exercise your right to vote for the various elections that take place.
