Industrial espionage relates to the issue of someone with inside knowledge of a business compromising it by selling or giving that information to someone else. Individuals who knowingly purchase such information either through purchasing it, blackmailing someone for it, or stealing it are in violation of laws that are in place to protect businesses and their trade secrets.
There are many different types of businesses where industrial espionage is an issue that has to be dealt with. They include technological industries where computers or vehicles are designed. It can also be various factories where recipes for foods and beverages are made. Most businesses that have trade secrets limit the number of individuals who have complete access to such important information. They are required to sign a Non-Disclosure Statement that legally prevents them from sharing such information in any form.
Employers have to be very careful who they share trade secrets with including funding institutions and possible business partners. The employees of a business have to be carefully watched as well. Research shows that 85% of industrial espionage occurs from those who either work for the business or have previously. Some of them want to share the information to make a profit while others are looking to ruin the business because they hold a grudge against it.
The reason why there are laws to protect trade secrets is that the loss of them can cost the business a great deal of money. It simply isn’t fair for a business to spend their time investing in research and production efforts. Once they have a marketable product allowing others to get that information and use it to create the same or a very similar product isn’t fair.
The laws are very clear when it comes to what constitutes industrial espionage yet proving it in a court of law is often difficult. There are cases though were individuals have been required to pay huge fines, legal fees, and even serve jail time for their attempts at industrial espionage. Anyone who thinks industrial espionage is an easy way to make some cash needs to think about the consequences. Businesses are not willing to forgive and forget when it comes to their trade secrets being compromised.
