Informational Articals - Sign Language - Baby Sign Language

It is said that the earlier in life you are introduced to a new language the easier you will pick it up. That particular language doesn’t have to be verbal though as it is possible to teach sign language to babies. This can provide your child with a very effective method for communicating. It also helps to forge a very special bond between the parents and the child.

Some individuals are afraid teaching their child sign language will hinder their ability to learn to speak. However research has shown this is not the case. Most baby’s who learn sign language learn to verbalize sooner in life and they have a larger vocabulary. The words they speak are understood by most individuals instead of just their parents and caregivers who have developed an understanding on how this particular child communicates.

Further research shows that baby’s who know sign language don’t get agitated and frustrated as often as other children their age. This is because they don’t have to continually struggle to get their needs identified and met. This can lead to better self esteem for the child as well.

Teaching a baby to communicate using sign language really isn’t any different than teaching them to clap when they are happy or wave when someone is leaving. You can start introducing various types of sign language to babies between 9 and 12 months of age. Use simple signs that identify objects they are familiar with such as their blanket, their crib, and familiar faces.

As you sign the word to the child say the word at the same time. Baby’s quickly pick up learning by word association. You child will likely begin to sign along with you in no time at all. Don’t force your child to learn too much at one time as babies tend to have a short attention span. Do try to incorporate the sign language at least a few minutes each day though.

As your child begins to take an interest in sign language make sure you offer plenty of praise. This should be done both orally and with sign. While your child may have difficulties at first getting the correct hand motion for the sign it will come with time. Focus more on the fact that they are attempting to communicate with you using the various signs you have taught them.
