Informational Articals - Postmodernism - Postmodern Philosophy

Postmodern philosophy was a controversial issue in its time – you either loved the ideas and wanted to see such changes occurring or you were against it and hated that people were trying to change so many aspects of society. There is still plenty of debate today over what, if anything, postmodern philosophy accomplished.

Many people believe it played a significant role in freedom of expression in writing, art, and even architecture. You also have those who believe postmodern philosophy was based on nothing more than selfishness and a lack of responsibility. However this type of philosophy was based on one basic element – truth. With postmodern philosophy the goal was to be able to continue asking for information and questioning what is being presented. It was an idea to develop your own beliefs based on factual information.

It is believed that the postmodern philosophy movement started in France during the 20th Century. The followers of this type of philosophy wanted to expand from structuralism into more individuality. One of the biggest elements of postmodern philosophy is that the beliefs of each individual was to be expressed but also respected. There was no ongoing debate of who was right and why. In fact the quote for this era in relation to philosophy is “The only absolute truth is that there are no absolute truths”.

Some individuals took this quote to mean that postmodern philosophers didn’t want to take responsibility. They didn’t come up with any solid foundations for which one could build upon. However it is the true philosophy that recognizes the beauty of this – each person is left to make their own decisions. It has not been done for them so the lack of guidance isn’t from being irresponsible but from encouraging freedom to explore on your own.

Regardless of your own views of postmodern philosophy you have to admit that it set precedence in society for gaining information if you want it. We are no longer force fed information from the media and political groups that they want us to hear. We have the ability to find out various sides to different issues, weight the consequences of each side, and then make up our own mind as to how we feel about it.
