Informational Articals - Postmodernism - Postmodern Architecture
It is believed the entire postmodern era started with significant changes to architecture. It was evident in the structural developments of homes, businesses, and other entities. As these unique and original forms started to take on a life of their own many people really took to the idea. They were tired of conforming to the modern concepts of everything being uniform because it had become boring.
Robert Venturi is credited with starting the postmodern architecture movement. He campaigned to get more originality into the field. Many people saw him as a rebel but others found his visions to be realistic and a breath of fresh air. He explained that if Las Vegas could use differences in architecture on the strip why couldn’t that same type of design options be available everywhere.
Of course the structural soundness of the building had to be taken into consideration at all times. This was sometimes difficult because code inspectors were weary and many lenders didn’t want to loan the extra funds to encourage such endeavors. However the elements of postmodern architecture have been able to add originality and depth to many buildings.
Many people believe postmodern architecture was able to explode as it did during this time period because of the availability of detailed tools and advances in equipment used to build with. These elements combined with some original ideas lead to postmodern architecture being accepted as well as encouraged.
Many business owners found that the look of postmodern architecture influenced where consumers shopped. This lead to a variety of new concepts in the field of architecture being incorporated to fit the style and the type of business. Windows took on new looks and a building could be round instead of square. The various ideas that took shape during this period can still be found today. Think about the various buildings where you do business and the unique structures they offer both inside and out.
The freedom of expression that has been expressed through architecture is something most of us take for granted today. Even the large skyscrapers in major cities have unique features and qualities. This is all due in part to the efforts of those who had a vision for postmodernism in the area of architecture.
