Informational Articals - Nuns

A Nun is a woman who has decided to dedicate her life to serving God and to help take care of the needs of those in the Church. They are often stereotyped as older women who have decided to remove themselves from society. However many Nuns have chosen this lifestyle because they want to make God and their religion a priority in their life. Most Nuns live together in a convent so they can spend their time with other women who have the same religious beliefs.

Nuns are a vital part of the history and the beliefs of the Church they belong to. In many religions the Priests turn to the Nuns for assistance with various aspects of the Church and members of it. They have to dedicate their life to serving the needs of both God and the Church. Nuns also spend several hours each day engaging in prayer. While the specifics of being a Nun depend on the type of religion they belong to the general ideals and concepts are the same.

In some religions Nuns are not allowed to leave the Church or the convent. They interact only with the other Nuns and the Priests. In other religions though Nuns continue contact with their families and friends from the outside world. They are also able to teach others about various aspects of religion and different types of vocations. This is often done in the community in which the convent is located.

Throughout history there have been many notable Nuns who have made significant contributions to society as a whole. The one most people are familiar with is Mother Theresa who established the Missionary of Charity. She was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 in the humanitarian category. The work she did for the sick and the poor has been hard to match by any one person. The amount of interest that she created for such work in other organizations is to be noted as well.

Some women become Nuns quite early in life and for others it is a calling that comes later in life. There is a misconception that all Nuns have been with the Church since they were young women. Many of them turn to their religion and eventually to becoming a Nun after a failed marriage or a very difficult event that took place in their life. The regulations for becoming a Nun vary by religion.
