Informational Articals - Grey Nuns

The Grey Nuns of the Sacred Heart was introduced in the 1920’s and they are well known and appreciated for their generosity to the poor and the needy around the world. They are very compassionate to these needs and work hard to make lifelong changes that will give such individuals the chance to have a decent life. At the same time the Grey Nuns honor their Faith in God and their relationship with the religion of their choice. There are a total of six Grey Nuns congregations found around the world right now – all of them dedicated to serving others. Only one of them is located in the United States.

The majority of the women who become Grey Nuns have a good education in an area of public outreach including the medical field, social work, education, and the ministry. Each of these women have taken the standard vows to become a Nun including the Vow of Poverty, the Vow of Chastity, and the Vow of Obedience. They are a united group of women who use their Faith combined with their education and compassion to reach out to other people who are less fortunate than they are.

Depending on the particular skills of the Grey Nuns they do community outreach to a very diverse population. In addition to taking a look at the income of the individuals they help, the Grey Nuns take a look at the lifestyles of these individuals. They are very involved with working with individuals suffering from drug or alcohol addictions, men and women who are incarcerated, teen parents, those who have a physical or mental disability, and those who have been involved in domestic abuse.

Many people view the Grey Nuns as angels who really do care. These women are very thankful for the opportunity to share their skills to help others. They also work hard to promote their relationship with God, the Church, and with each other. They find the strength to deal with the various situations they see on a daily basis through those various relationships. The Grey Nuns also tackle politics by standing their ground and giving a voice to preventing some issues such as abortion and capital punishment.
