Informational Articals - Honor Codes - School Pledges

A school pledge is designed to be inspiring and motivating for those who are in attendance. There many be different pledges that are randomly introduced for different times of the year. Other schools have one central pledge that all students learn as soon as they start attending there. These particular pledges are often about individual learning and individual behaviors.

With the recent number of incidences involving school violence many school pledges are including information about protecting each other from violence. A school pledge often gives students a sense of pride in themselves and in the school they attend. They also serve to provide unity for the group because they all have one central thing to believe in.

If your school doesn’t participate in pledges you can talk to administration about getting them implemented. This is a great way to get more students involved in the school on the same level. Research shows those schools with pledges are less likely to experience problems with gangs and with vandalism of school property.

One heated debate that continues with school pledges is concerning reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. Most schools have removed it from the daily curriculum and many parents are angry about it. On the other side of the fence though you have students and parents who do not want it to be required. Many individuals have a problem with the term “God” in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Another debate is that some schools make the students recite it in both English and Spanish. The common debate over individuals in the United States needing to speak English has been going on for years. Add to that issue that they Pledge of Allegiance is in regards to the United States only and you can see why so many people are confused and have their own opinion on the subjects.

For the most part though school pledges seem to incorporate very positive messages. Some students think they are silly or a waste of time but for the most part they enjoy them. Parents should be aware of the school pledges that are being used just as they should know about the curriculum their child is engaging in.
