Sanctions are viewed as two sides of the coin – it really depends on the context in which you are talking about them. An individual may be sanctioned as a punishment for not following the rules or breaking curfew. Other individuals may be sanctioned which means they have been granted permission to engage in a particular activity. Sanctions can be imposed on individuals, businesses, and even countries.

One of the biggest issues right now on a global scale that involves sanctions is in regards to Iraq. These sanctions have been in place since 1990 and may political activisists are not happy with them. Many schools incorporate several different levels of sanctions to deal with disciplinary issues.

In order to ensure the students are aware of the various sanctions in place handbooks are often handed out. This way each student should be aware of what is expected from them in regards to their behaviors. You can prevent misunderstandings though by clearly outlining the different guidelines before hand.

Parents should be aware of these sanctions as well as the students. This way they will know what the disciplinary process involves. It also gives the parents the chance to ask questions ahead of time if they aren’t comfortable with the sanctions or they don’t understand them. The reasons behind them should be clearly stated in a way that makes sense from someone in administration.

When it comes to permission with a sanction it can mean many different things. For example a political candidate can be supported by others with their knowledge. This is a ways of sanctioning support and eventually votes for that individual. Students may be sanctioned as an honor to participate in a specific event or ceremony.

Some individuals don’t like the term sanction because the meaning is too diverse. It could leave you wondering if the sanction is a good thing or a bad thing. Generally though you will be able to determine the meaning based on the context of the other information. The implementation of sanctions for either a punishment or a reward though is a great way to encourage people to follow through with the rules or to work hard for something they really want to accomplish.
