While we all have laws we have to abide by, there are various honor codes in place for particular groups. Most of these honor codes aren’t enforced by law but they are strictly enforced by the organization that has set them. Violators of the honor code may find they are excluded from the group they have worked so hard to become a part of.
Honor codes are the most prevalent in the various branches of the military than anywhere else. There is generally a pledge that is associated with the various honor codes in these organizations. Each member has the right to decline membership based on what is being asked of them with the honor code. However once they commit to it they are expected to comply with it at all times.
Honor codes have lead to some scandals throughout society though. There have been reports of police officers covering up for each other because they are bound by their honor code. There have been issues at colleges where individuals suspected of cheating have been protected because they are protected by others who are bound by the honor code.
Complying with honor codes is a personal decision that you have to make based on your integrity and your ethical beliefs. There are many people who sit on the fence when it comes to an honor code. They bend the rules to fit their needs instead of accepting it for what it is. These are the individuals who often struggle with honor codes because they try to convince themselves that there are valid reasons for not complying.
Even though there is that risk most organizations who engage in honor codes find them to be very successful. They work well on college campuses and in the military. Individuals enjoy being part of an elite group with their own code in place. It is more than just words for these individuals – the codes are a way for them to behavior and to live their life.
Honor codes also encourage individuals to take personal responsibility for their own choices and decisions. It is important to be accepted by the group but failing to comply with the honor code is a sure way to find yourself excluded from that group.
