Informational Articals - Gulfs -

A gulf is a body of water that has land that extends into it. This is different than an island because an island is surrounded by water on all sides. A gulf is found the edge of land that can be reached by other means because it isn’t completely surrounded by water. In fact a gulf is almost completely surrounded by land. Most gulf regions span for thousands of miles.

One of the most popular gulf areas is the Gulf of Mexico. This is the largest gulf area in the world ranging a distance of approximately 600,000 square miles. This is a popular location for commercial fishing and for extracting petroleum. There are plenty of concerns over the amount of pollution in the Gulf of Mexico though in some areas. It has lead to a low level of oxygen in thousands of miles of it. This has resulted in aquatic life dying as well as humans and animals being affected by it.

One of the most important gulfs is the Persian Gulf found between Saudi Arabia and Iran. Oil tankers transport large volumes of petroleum along this gulf area to all areas of the world. If this gulf is not available for this purpose the availability of fuel will be significantly impacted.

The fact that there is so much seafood and petroleum found in the gulfs make them prime working locations for thousands of people. Many of them stay out at sea for long periods of time, even months. This is very hard work and a hard way to make a living. However many people enjoy working in the gulf and wouldn’t trade it for anything. While these types of jobs are dangerous and challenging they are also very rewarding.

The various gulfs around the world are home to many different types of aquatic animals and plants. It is becoming increasingly difficult to find the balance between leaving the areas alone so that they can continue to thrive and meaning the demand for oil and seafood. Since both of these are million dollar industries the quest for making money generally prevails. This can result in the balance of the ecosystems being seriously upset.
