Instead the process involves magnetic pickups that are applied to the strings and create the vibrations. These pickups can contain either a single or double coil depending on the sound you want. Single coils have an underlying hum associated with them while double coils offer a deeper sound.

Just as there is plenty of variety in the types of electric guitars on the market, the sounds you can create with them are just as unique. Changing the volume, clips, and the way the strings are plucked all determine the result of the overall sound. This is why many musicians you see performing life change electric guitars for particular sounds. They want to be able to produce a particular sound they can only get by doing so.

Since many recordings are digitally enhanced the pressure is on the guitarist of the band to create that same sound in the live show.
