Informational Articals - Goldfish -
Goldfish make wonderful pets for young children because they don’t require too much care. They are also very inexpensive so if they don’t happen to survive you haven’t invested a great deal of money in them. They are among the first domestic fish and are very popular because of the beautiful golden color they offer. While this golden color makes them very popular pets, it doesn’t do them much good in a natural habitat. They are unable to hide well due to their color so they frequently become meals for other types of fish.
The size of goldfish ranges significantly from extremely small to several feet long. An average life span for goldfish is eight years but some have been known to live as long as twenty years. They can live in bowls or aquariums in your home or even in a pond in your backyard.
Many types of goldfish are able to live in cold water so you don’t need to warm the tank. They can even live in your pond in the winter time under the ice if they have enough food. Others don’t do well with sudden temperature changes which is why may goldfish die when you clean their bowl and replace it with new water. Make sure the water they are going into is the same is where they are so they will survive.
It isn’t a good idea to handle your goldfish with your hands because it removes the elements in their coat that protect them. This could cause your goldfish to die from bacteria that reach them in the water. Always use a net to transfer the goldfish from one location to another.
You need to be very careful about how much you feed your goldfish. They are greedy fish and they will eat more than they should. However this is very difficult on their intestines and it could result in their death. Make sure you read the information on the goldfish food you purchase for them and never give them more than you should.
Many goldfish appear to be asking for more food as they see their owner’s approaching but don’t give in. This is simply a learned behavior as most of the contact you will have with the goldfish involves feeding them – it doesn’t mean they are hungry. This particular learning pattern though shows that goldfish are very intelligent.
There are plenty of goldfish varieties for you to choose from and some of them don’t offer the vibrant gold color. Due to this fact they are commonly mistaken for other types of fish by those who aren’t familiar with these other breeds. Make sure you get the right type of food and know how to properly care for the breed of goldfish you have purchased. This way they can be well taken care of and a delightful attraction in your home or pond. With the right care your goldfish will thrive and live for many years.
