Informational Articals - Goldfish - Goldfish Breeding

The type of goldfish most people are familiar with are those that offer a goldfish or bright orange color. However there are many other types of goldfish that are breed as well. They have different colors though so they may not always be associated with the concept of goldfish.

Many of them breed on their own but others are specifically breed in order to create various colored fish. Hand stripping is the process of artificial breeding for some types of goldfish. It is important that this process is only done by experts in the field because the fish being breed can die if it is not done correctly.

Some of the types of goldfish on the market are very rare so it is important for breeders to try to increase the population. These types of goldfish are quite expensive to purchase though because of the demand for them versus the low quantity of them readily available. Once they have been breed goldfish lay eggs that hatch within a couple of days.

To help protect the young so they can live to become mature goldfish they aren’t born with the goldfish or bright orange color. They feature a brownish color that allows them to blend in well in their environment. Around the age of one year they start to develop the various colors that we associate with breeds of goldfish.

Most goldfish breeding occurs in the springtime. Only goldfish that are healthy are able to produce offspring so any that don’t get enough water or nutrition will not reproduce. If your goldfish do produce eggs you will want to remove them from the location as soon as you seen them. It is quite common for the parents to either eat the eggs or to eat the young once they hatch.

Goldfish breed on their own when they are in a healthy environment that offers them plenty of food and water. They also need to have enough room to grow. Goldfish that are not having their basic needs met properly will not reproduce. Research has shown that natural reproduction among goldfish takes place more often in ponds than in bowls or aquariums.

Generally you will see the attempts to breed taking place as the goldfish seem to be bumping into each other. Many people view this as aggression among the goldfish or that they are fighting for food but it is a natural part of their courtship.
