Informational Articals - Glaciers -

Glaciers create a very beautiful type of landscaping but due to the fact that many of the glaciers in the world are slowly melting they are continually changing shape. While the naked eye doesn’t see this taking place reports from researchers and scientists have verified these accounts.

Glaciers are generally found in very cold locations around the world with the majority of them being towards the North and South Poles. These are areas that experience high levels of snow, low temperatures, and very little sunlight for the majority of the year. It is the little bit of sunlight that glaciers do receive that results in the melting process to begin.

The look of glaciers is that of large mountains or small hills depending on the size of it. The size of a glacier depends on the cold temperatures combined with the amount of precipitation the area receives. Glaciers continue to move as the thin layers of ice below them form. This leads to the soil underneath eroding. As the glacier continues to glide along the land left underneath is destroyed.

The life of a glacier is controlled by the various elements that surround it. Glaciers continue to change on a regular basis and they tend to destroy the ground they are on top of. This is a major issue because over time a glacier moves to cover a great deal of land. New glaciers continue to emerge as layers of ice and snow continue to accumulate in the colder regions of the world.

Alpine glaciers are those found in different mountain terrains while continental glaciers cover large areas of land. Alpine glaciers seem to grow quicker and move faster due to the fact that they are able to get friction and momentum built up as they move down the side of a mountain. The result of this though is that areas where there are alpine glaciers experience the most damage.

While glaciers are very pretty to look at the amount of damage they cause due to erosion is very significant. The larger a glacier is and the more movement it has the more damage it will cause. Scientists continue to study the effects of glaciers but so far the information they have show they do much more damage than good for the environment.
