Informational Articals - Chicken Eggs

The majority of eggs that individuals enjoy eating come from female chickens known as hens. The eggs you purchase from a supermarket are the result of chickens that are being taken care of on a farm for this particular reason. They are fed a variety of healthy diet items to help ensure the quality of the eggs that you buy to eat. There are more than 20 million chickens in the United States alone used to collect enough eggs from to meet the market demand.

Depending on how well they are cared for female chickens are able to produce eggs for up to eleven years. In many cases those that are no longer able to produce eggs are then used for their meat. Most of the female chickens are kept in a hen house where their primary job is to lay eggs.

By keeping the environment safe and stress free more eggs are produced. Female chickens do well with a routine and they will lay their eggs in the same location around the same time each day. Most hens are able to lay one egg every 25 hours but some of them are able to produce two at a time.

Many organizations that promote rights for animals have issues with the way that hens are kept in pens in order to continually produce eggs. They also are against the common practice of removing the beaks on hens that are used to lay eggs. The reason why this is to done is to prevent them from fighting with each other. According to some researchers this particular process leaves the hen in constant pain for the remainder of their life.

There are some issues with the different products hens are given in order to produce chicken eggs faster and of better quality. Some of these products have been identified as antibiotics, arsenic, and growth hormones. Most of the time though these are given to chickens that will be used for meat instead of those used to produce eggs.

Raising chickens to lay eggs is a billion dollar industry though and since there is such a demand for the products it won’t be slowing down any time soon. To help offset complaints by consumers and animal rights activists more inspections of the businesses that raise hens are being conducted. If unsanitary conditions are found then changes must be made or the business will be fined or closed down.
