Informational Articals - Dog Catchers
Dog catchers have a very hard and dangerous job – and they don’t just catch dogs! There job is to pick up any stray dogs they happen to see running around town or that someone calls them about. They also pick up other types of animals that may be posing a threat. If the dog happens to be wearing a collar with tags on it they will either go to the residence of the animal or make a phone call. This is all done in an effort to reunite the dog with the rightful owners.
Sometimes dog catchers are called to look into issues relating to dogs being abandoned or neglected. At some homes several dogs can be found that aren’t getting the attention or the nutrition they need to stay healthy. They will remove these dogs in such instances as well as pick up dogs that have been abandoned by their owners.
Dogs that aren’t able to be reunited with their families are taken to the local animal shelter. Here they get a warm place to stay and enough food but there is very little one on one attention due to the number of dogs compared to the few staff members. If no one comes to claim the dog within a specified time frame it can be placed for adoption for anyone who can show they will be able to provide a good home for it.
Many dogs are euthanized after a period of time has gone by without an owner claiming them or someone adopting them. While this may seem very cruel it is often necessary in order to keep the population of unwanted dogs down. It is already out of control in most parts of the nation. Older dogs are often the least likely to be adopted as are those who have medical problems or who display temperament issues.
Dog catchers have a very challenging job because they never really know how a dog they approach is going to reach. Some of them are very friendly and hungry so they go with the dog catcher immediately. Others are scared and they run as fast as they can in the other direction. Still yet there are other dogs that protect their territory at all costs. They are quite aggressive and they can attack the dog catcher at any time.
