Informational Articals - Dog Catchers - Dog Pounds

A dog pound is a common name for an animal shelter as it is a location where abandoned dogs and even those that have been found are kept. They get food and shelter but they don’t get very much attention that is needed for a dog to live a healthy life. Most dog pounds don’t offer the best accommodations either. The animals are often found in very small cages without anything to do for stimulation.

A dog pound is a great place to look if your dog is missing because it may have been picked up by a code enforcement officer. If your dog isn’t at the pound you can file a missing dog report with them. This way if your dog does happen to come in they can contact you immediately to come pick it up. In some instances you may have to pay a processing fee to get your dog back from the pound to cover the cost of accommodating them.

Dogs that don’t get claimed after a specified period of time from a dog pound are either put to sleep or adopted by people who are looking for a pet. This is a less expensive option than getting a dog from a pet store or a dog breeder. There are all types of dogs to be found at the local dog pound. Some of them are purebred and others are mixed breeds. However they all have one thing in common – they need to someone to adopt them so they can live in a better environment.

If you adopt a dog from a pound it should have a full medical evaluation before you do. Verification that the dog is current on all of their shots should be disclosed. You also want to spend some time interacting with the dog so you can get a good idea of their behavior and temperament. Many dogs that end up in a pound have been abused or neglected so they will need a great deal of love and attention before they are able to trust their new owner.

There are too many dogs that end up in pounds because they weren’t properly cared for or the got separated from their families. Most dog pounds are run by the city so they don’t have a great deal of money to care for these animals. Many dog pounds have websites where you can see the animals they have for adoption and that have been brought in recently.
