Informational Articals - Joint Custody

Joint custody of children is being more common in society these days. Since the majority of households have two parents who work outside of the home the roles have changed and both parents take responsibility for the needs of the children. Most separations and divorces that occur have nothing to do with the children but rather with the parents growing apart. Joint custody is a great way to ensure the children are able to continue a loving relationship with both of their parents on a regular basis.

Joint custody works the best when both parents live within close proximity of each other. This way the children can alternate the days they stay with each parent but still have contact with their friends and not have any problems getting to and from school. The arrangements for joint custody allows each parent to have a set amount of parenting time but it isn’t always 50/50.

For those children who have parents living a distance from each other the joint custody may be allocated differently. For example the children may live with one parent during the school year but go with the other during Spring Break, Christmas Break, and summer vacation.

A joint custody agreement goes smoother when both parents agree to it rather than the courts having to mandate it. When the parents get along they are able to be flexible with the custody arrangement so that the children benefit from holidays, vacations, and other events they would otherwise miss with one of the parents.

Sharing custody of children isn’t always easy but it is a good option as long as both of the parents in question have the best interests of the children in mind. Always stay positive about the situation and never talk bad about the other parent in their presence. Prepare the children for the transition from one location to the next so that it won’t be so difficult for them.

Communication between the parents needs to be done without the assistance of the children. If speaking in person is too difficult try e-mail for a while until you are able to move on to better means of communication. If your children know they can depend on both of their parents for any problems that arise they will feel better about themselves and the joint custody arrangement.
