Informational Articals - Chlorine and Hair

Many individuals enjoy swimming on a regular basis in their home pool or a public swimming pool. However this can cause damage to your hair that is difficult to deal with. A common problem is that they hair becomes very brittle and dry on the ends. This is because chlorine is a very harsh chemical.

Continued exposure to it can also cause your hair to have a greenish tint to it. This is most noticeable in those with very light tones of hair color. The greenish tint is the result of the copper that is in the water. There are special shampoos you can use to remove it or you can use home remedies. Rinsing your hair with apple cider vinegar or lemon juice is very helpful.

You can prevent such damage to your hair by wearing a cap while you swim. Many individuals feel self conscious doing so but it can be the best way to protect your hair. If you already have thin or damaged hair it is even more important that you protect it from the chlorine in the pool. Most sporting good stores carry a better selection of swim caps than your local retailer.

There are plenty of excellent shampoos and conditioners designed specifically for those who swim a great deal of the time. Most of them have a protective coating that prevents the chlorine from penetrating your hair as quickly. Take them with you to the pool and immediately wash your hair after you have left the pool. The longer you allow the chlorine to stay on your hair the more damage it can do. It is also a good idea to coat your hair with conditioner before you go swimming.

Since other types of hair care can damage it as well you want to cut back on those activities. Blow drying your hair, using excessive styling products, and brushing your hair with a low quality brush all contribute to damage. If you combine these activities with exposure to a great deal of chlorine you will end up with more problems then if you don’t. Swimming is a great activity for fun and exercise but you need to protect your hair at the same time.
