There are three different degrees of burns that can occur on your body, and each one of them requires different types of treatment. It depends on the areas that have been burned as well as the percentage of your body that they burns cover. It also depends on the type of burn you have. It can be due to chemicals, heat, electricity, or radiation.

Minor burns are classified as first degree and in most cases you can treat them on your own without any medical attention. They will likely sting and be tender but most first degree burns will heal on their own in a couple of days with no scaring. They only burn the top layer of skin so you won’t have any long term damage.

You can provide immediate relieve for a first degree burn by running the area under cold water for several minutes. You may want to apply a burn ointment or aloe vera to the area as well. Apply a loose fitting bandage of gauge around the area to prevent it from getting infected if the area blisters.

Second degree burns go into the deeper tissues of the skin so they take longer to heal. Depending on how deep the go there may be nerve damage in the area. You will likely end up with blisters that fill with liquid from a second degree burn. You may also end up with scarring. Make sure you see a medical professional for a second degree burn. Any draining of the liquid or removal of dead skin needs to be done by a professional. They may wrap the area for several weeks to prevent infection from setting in.

The most serious types or burns are classified as third degree. They can result in death due to infection or the amount of the body they cover. Third degree burns often go deep into the layers of skin so graphs may have to be taken from other areas of the body. Most individuals who have third degree burns don’t feel very much pain due to the fact that the nerves have been so severely damaged. Immediate medical attention is required for any third degree burns.
