Botany is the study of flowers and plants and since there are so many of each it encompasses a very large element. There are more than 500,000 different species of plants and flowers. To help narrow it down there are several specialty areas of botany that are studied. Some of the various areas that are studied include how plants grow, the reproduction of flowers and plants, and various diseases and threats to them that prevent them from being able to grow properly.

The information that we have due to the study of botany is vital to the balance of all organisms on the planet. These plants are responsible for providing us with the oxygen we need to breathe and at the same time they remove carbon dioxide from the environment. We also use several different species of flowers and plants in order to make foods and different types of medicines.

Flowers and plants play a very important role in the food chain even if you don’t realize it. Many of the main sources of food we get live off of flowers and plants for their own survival. This is why it is important for these types of flowers and plants to remain in their natural habitat.

Botanists continue to monitor the destruction of the natural habitat of various species of flowers and plants. Some of them are on the endangered list because they are in such short supply they will one day be extinct if preventative measures are not taken to help the numbers increase.

Scientists study the development of various types of flowers and plants so we can learn more about them. This is how the processes of cell division and protein synthesis were discovered. They appear in more species than just flowers and plants but without the research on them it would not have been known.

We are able to find out information about the environment from studying flowers and plants as well. The damage to the ozone layers can be determined by studying the levels of ultraviolet radiation. The life cycles of plants can also be used to predict weather patterns. The area of botany is very interesting and very important to us. Still, with all the information available on plants and flowers there are still many that haven’t yet been identified.
