Soliciting is the process of trying to persuade an individual to purchase something. This is different from advertising because it is generally done on an individual basis. Solicitors may go door to door or from business to business trying to encourage people to buy what they are selling. It even takes place in the parking lots of college campuses, retail stores, and various places of employment.
The items being solicited vary in nature. It can be something like the stereo from their car, watches, jewelry, clothing, food, books, and anything else the person can get their hands on to sell. Most people are hesitant to purchase these types of things from solicitors because you never know if it is stolen property. However other people do make the purchase because they feel sorry for the individual or because they really want the item being sold and the price is too good for them to pass it by.
For the most part though people and businesses get tired of being solicited to. It may not be too distracting if it happens on occasion but no one wants to deal with that on a regular basis. To protect themselves against such solicitations home owners and business owners have a right to place a sign in their windows stating no solicitating is allowed. Should individuals attempt to do so anyway they could face criminal charges.
To get around this though solicitors use other ways to get the attention of people. They may use the internet and send you solicitations through your e-mail account. This is considered to be SPAM and to be illegal. However it is often hard to get it the source of the e-mails so may people who send them go unpunished for it. They change their server location often so even if it is reported to law enforcement it is almost impossible to track them down.
Phone solicitation is popular as well. All they have to do is sit down with the local phone book and start dialing the numbers they find. Many people simply tell the caller they aren’t interested or hang up. Most people are weary to purchase anything over the phone when they get called with a solicitation because of the potential for scams. If you are interested in what they have to offer ask for a phone number where you can call them back after you have verified the information.
