Soliciting is the concept of selling
There is plenty of controversy that surrounds something as simple as a sign that reads No Soliciting. You see them in the windows of many businesses as well as in the windows of some homes. One complaint by those who wish to display such signs is that there are no nice signs.
They fear just saying no sounds rude and for a business they don‘t want to give the wrong impression. They would like to see the works Thank You or Please added to the No Soliciting signs so they have a softer tone to them.
In a world of free marketing and free enterprise it is common for door to door salesman to approach both private citizens and businesses. Many people don’t wish to be bombarded by such solicitations on a regular basis.
Businesses are trying to meet the needs of their customers and they can’t do that when they are listening to a variety of sales pitches all day long. Many homeowners are very weary of allowing such strangers to come to their home and to try to offer them items for sale. The elderly are especially worried about potential robbers coming to their home under the pretense of selling them something. There is also the issue that many of them find it a struggle just to get to their front door to answer it.
You also have salesman who are offended by the No Soliciting signs because they think if people will just listen to what they are offering then they will want to buy it. They feel it greatly restricts their ability to generate the volumes of sales that they would otherwise be able to. However they may feel about it the law says solicitors have to respect these signs. They can’t pretend they don’t see them when they are well displayed in the windows of businesses and individuals.
As for the feeling that the wording on the No Soliciting signs is rude you can get past that by printing your own. You can easily do so with any computer and printer. You can make it read No Soliciting, Thank You or something similar in nature.
