Nobel Prize Articles - Nobel Prize Winners

Since the Nobel Prize was introduced in 1901 766 people have been honored with receiving medals, diplomas, and cash awards for their efforts. Of those 766 winners only 33 of them have been women. The first woman to win the Nobel Prize was Marie Curie in 1903. She is the only woman to win the Nobel Prize twice (the second time was in 1911). In addition to Curie, there have been some other multiple winners. Three men have also won it twice for their accomplishments.

There are also four married couples who have each won a Nobel Prize. In some instances the work was recognized together and in others they were recognized for separate works that noted a contribution to the world. There are several mentions of brothers, fathers and sons, and families working together and winning a Nobel Prize for their efforts. Curie gets recognition again because in addition to being the only woman to win twice her husband and her mother both have won Nobel Prizes as well.

The very first winners f the Nobel Prize in 1901 were Jacobus Van Hoff for Chemistry, Sully Prudhomme for literature, Emil von Behring for medicine, Henry Dunant for peace, Frederic Passy for peace, and Wilhelm Conrad Rontgen for physics. There was plenty of excitemet surrounding this event and it continues to be a very prestiguous event still today.

The youngest person to ever receive the Nobel Prize is Lawrence Bragg. He was 25 years old in 1915 when he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics along with his father. The oldest person to win the Nobel Prize is Raymond David Jr. He too won the Nobel Prize for physics in 2002 at the age of 88.

There are some individuals who have been recognized as winners of the Nobel Prize but they declined to accept it. In 1964 Jean Paul Sartre won for his literature work. He declined to accept it though because he had long denounced any types of official recognition for his work. Boris Pasternak won the 1958 Nobel Prize for his literature but his country (Soviet Union) pressured him not to accept it due to the conflicts among their Nation and others at the time.
