Becoming a licensed midwife requires you to complete a training program. This can be at a midwifery school, online, or in some instances though an on the job training internship program. In addition to having a license with a background in nursing, midwives have to complete training in the various aspects of prenatal care, childbirth, post partum issues, and the various situations that can arise during any given pregnancy. The length of the training program depends on the facility that you take it through and the requirements of the program.
The majority of them are one year in length though. This based on the fact that you already have your nursing degree. Many programs offer midwifery training that include the nursing part of it as well. This type of program is for those who have not official training yet in either of the areas.
This type of midwifery training program generally takes four years to complete. If you have all of your prerequisites completed for nursing then you may be able to complete a two year program with one year focusing on the remaining nursing credentials you need.
Most midwifery training programs offer a holistic approach because of the different elements that caring for a pregnant woman encompasses. Part of the program may include observing in a hospital obstetrics setting and working along side other midwives in the field. Part of the training is to identify any unusual circumstances that may warrant for the midwife to work with medical professionals for the best interest of the mother and the unborn child.

Finding the right midwifery training program for you is important. There are currently 36 midwife training schools in the United States. Since their locations can make it difficult for some people to attend there are great online courses for you to learn the basic material. You can then set up the internship with local medical facilities. Make sure you any midwifery training program you enroll in is accredited. You wan to complete the program with all the knowledge you need to be a successful midwife.
