If you are interested in becoming a midwife there are plenty of good programs out there for you to choose from. First you need to find out the guidelines in your particular state. If you plan to work as a midwife in another country the regulations are different so make sure you take that into consideration as well.

In most instances a midwife has to be a licensed nurse. There is also a midwife licensing program that has to be completed. For the protection of those a midwife serves a background in obstetrics is important and a background check will be conducted. It is also important that you are a caring person who is able to effectively communicate with pregnant women and their families. A pregnant woman is putting her well being and that of her unborn child into the hands of the midwife so she has to be able to build a trusting relationship.

The internet is a good way to conduct research about the various schools that offer courses in midwifery. Make sure you carefully evaluate the program and the credentials behind it. There are even some programs for becoming a midwife that you can complete online. Make sure these programs are accredited. Many of the best midwife programs have an internship as part of the program where you will work side by side with other midwives for a specific amount of hours.

A licensed midwife is one that completed the program through a midwifery school. Generally this is for women who want to assist in the field and they don’t have a nursing degree. There are only 11 states though that let midwives practice with this minimum certification. The remaining states require that the individual is also a certified nurse. This gives them the opportunity to work independently or through an agency as a midwife anywhere in the United States.

The prospect of becoming a midwife is one you should pursue if you are sincerely interested in this field. Women all over the world are choosing to work with a midwife at home rather than seeing a doctor in a traditional medical setting. There are plenty of job opportunities out there for someone who has completed the training process to become a midwife.
