Luck is a term that is used to describe things that happen to people – good or bad – that is out of their control. Someone can be considered to have good luck because they won the lottery. Someone else can be considered to have bad luck because they fell and broke their ankle. There are many folk tales that have to do with luck, many of them coming from the Irish culture.
The luck of the Irish is a common term that we here. A four leafed clover is hard to find but it is said finding one will bring you good luck. A leprechaun is said to be good luck as well. If you catch him he will grant you three wishes. If you find him at the end of the rainbow you may walk away with a pot of gold.
Of course we realize these are merely stories that have been passed down from one generation to the next. Many people believe you make your own luck in life by choosing your behaviors and your relationships wisely. What may appear to be luck that someone has is often due to plenty of effort on their part.
For example you might think any business deal your uncle touches is a money maker and therefore he is lucky. However his knowledge of such business dealings and his strategies are what make them work not pure luck.
For something to be considered luck in the true sense there needs to be factors in place that can’t be controlled by anyone else. If you find a $5 bill walking down the sidewalk then it is luck. The person who lost it didn’t leave it there intentionally for you to find. Anyone else could have walked the same path and found it.
Most of us have looked back at situations in our life and said we are lucky that the circumstances weren’t worse. For example many of us feel lucky that we never got caught drinking or smoking in our youth. Luck takes on many different meanings for everyone. It depends on if they believe the concept that everything happens for a reason or that random acts do happen to people.
