Ice Skating - Ice Skating Rinks

Ice skating is a very popular sport but one that can only be enjoyed outdoors during the colder months of the year. There is a huge risk of skating on a frozen pond or lake though because the ice can crack and you could find yourself underwater. To eliminate that risk as well as to allow you to enjoy ice skating all year long there are indoor ice skating rinks. This is a great solution for those who are serious about ice skating and they train daily.

An ice skating rink can be used for many different purposes. In addition to recreational ice skating and practicing it can serve as a location for a hockey game and for figure skating competitions. Indoor ice skating rinks are made from a synthetic type of material that allows it to look and feel like real ice. The foundation is generally made from concrete. So that you can’t tell the concrete is painted a pale blue or white instead of the standard grayish color.

There are pipes that carry water and a mixture of salt bine and antifreeze to the ice skating rink. This process creates a layer of actual ice that is several inches thick on top of the foundation. To slow the melting of the ice it is covered with an insulator when the ice skating rink isn’t in use.

Keeping the surface of an ice skating rink in good condition is important. It affects the quality of the skating that is able to be conducted on it. As the top layer of the ice skating rink gets dingy and scarred it can easily be resurfaced with a machine. This is done to prevent accidents and injuries from happening on the ice. It is time consuming to keep an ice skating rink in good operating condition but essential if customers are going to continually come back to use it.

There are professionals that do nothing but tend to the building and maintaining of ice skating rinks. Their skills are commonly used before sporting events that take place on an ice skating rink such as professional hockey games, speed skating events, and figure skating competitions.
