Global Warming Articles - The Ozone Layer

The ozone layer is a very significant portion of the atmosphere of the Earth. The properties of the ozone layer have been studied since 1913. The studies indicate that there are very few ozone molecules in the atmosphere with a rate of 3 molecules per 10 million. 90% of the ozone is found about 30 miles from the Earth’s surface in what is known as the stratosphere. The remaining 10% is found 6 -10 miles from the Earth’s surface in what is known as the troposphere.

The studies that have been done show that the ozone layer plays a very important role for humans, plants, and animals on Earth. The ozone in the stratosphere absorbs the majority of harmful ultraviolet light known as UV rays. This means it plays a role in the temperatures that will be felt on Earth.

The ozone that is found in the troposphere isn’t as beneficial to Earth. This is because it mixes with molecules close to the surface of the Earth. Ozone in large amounts can be toxic to people and to animals. It can cause health related issues for humans including bacteria and allergens. It can also affect the ability of plant life and crops to grow properly.

The ozone that is found in the troposphere has lead to significant concern in the scientific community. What many of us view simply as smog is a combination of this type of ozone mixed with other molecules. Due to issues with global warming the amount of ozone in the troposphere continues to increase, creating significant concerns for all of use to be aware of.

Many chemicals that are used in industries and even in homes affects the ozone layer as well. To help preserve the environment many governments have banned the use of chlorofluorocarbons. This is a combination of chlorine, fluorine, and carbon. Many industries are trying to use chemicals that are better for the environment as well.

The damage to the ozone layer can’t be repaired without our assistance in making it better. We have the option of continuing to deplete it or to take responsibility for repairing it. Scientists believe it is possible for the damage to the ozone layer to be corrected but the process will take approximately 50 years.
