Geometry Articles - Differential Geometry

Differential geometry is an advanced area of mathematics that involves the different concepts of calculus as well. This is often done in the areas of science – specifically physics and the theory of relativity. Differential geometry, as the name suggests, studies the differences between two or more objects. This is done by comparing the curves and the surfaces of each one. This is a very detailed and in depth type of mathematics that includes all areas of mathematics.

The concepts of differential geometry involve being able to determine the sets of items that are manifolds and those which are used to measure various types of distance. It can be quite difficult to tell by looking at objects by the shape alone because curves in items can be an illusion when it comes to determining their size.

There are many different formulas that apply to the concepts of differential geometry. Learning all of them definitely takes time. This is an area of mathematics where you can’t memorize all of them like you can with basic math concepts. Instead you have to learn how things apply to them and the logical steps that will take place next.

To help scientists in the area of physics apply the concepts of differential geometry there are plenty of good tools to assist them. A couple of decades ago they had to calculate this information by hand. Today that can use technology to plug numbers and results into the computer and get those same results in very little time.

For most of us the concepts of differential geometry are too detailed for us to understand. Even looking at detailed examples and step by step guidelines they are almost impossible to comprehend. After all you can’t get the right numbers to plug into the calculation if you don’t know what they are asking for. This is one area of mathematics that is best left to the experts in that field who know exactly what they mean and how to apply them.
