Extracurricular activities are those that take place under a school setting but they are not part of the required academics. Some common examples of extracurricular activities include band, sports, student government, choir, and working on the school newspaper. These types of activities help students develop their interests in a variety of areas. Many students are involved in more than one extracurricular activity at a time.
Many colleges and employers believe that participating in extracurricular activities helps students learn to be disciplined, organized, and passionate about various hobbies and interests. Therefore they look at these types of activities as well as a students academic achievements.
There are plenty of extracurricular activities that allow the students to grow on both a personal and a team level. They are generally offered by most schools by the time a student has entered junior high school. The types of extracurricular activities that a school offers depends on the budget they have, the area it is located in, and the number of students it has. The larger schools tend to offer more of a selection of extracurricular activities.
These activities have to be sponsored by either a faculty member, a community leader, or a parent. While many of them allow the students to take control of the activities the school guidelines state an adult has to be present to supervise such activities. There is even an extracurricular activity for those who want to focus only on their academics. It is called the National Honor Society.
Some students worry that their children will be too involved in extracurricular activities that their grades will suffer. However research shows that students who do additional activities actually do better in school. They feel more a part of what is taking place at the school as a whole and they work harder to do well in their classes.
Statistics also show that students who participate in extracurricular activities are less likely to engage in destructive behaviors including drugs, alcohol, and gang activity. It helps students to develop goals, improve their self esteem, and develop useful skills they will use for the rest of their lives. It also helps students learn to interact well with other people and they can carry that skill with them on into the work place.
