Learning about politics is something most of have a vague interest in. However for others the desire to take on leadership roles and to give the general public their chance to have a say starts at an early age. Student government is a great extracurricular activity for such individuals to participate in.

Most schools starting at a junior high level have student body governments that help speak for the people they represent. Each class level has a president, vice president, secretary, and treasurer. These leaders are voted into the position by their peers. Most schools hold open elections for student government positions that including campaigning and presenting a speech in front of the student body.

Student government organizations are found on college campuses all over America as well. They help to set up various activities that at the students want to participate in. This includes dances, movie nights, a gym to work out in, sports, and any other activities that the students seem to be motivated to participate in.

The student government officials general meet on a regular basis. They discuss upcoming events, problems on campus, and other items of business that have come up since the last meeting. Their job is to represent the voice of the students to those in charge. They may gather petitions or other forms of information to prove they have support on a particular issue.

They movements of student government should not be underestimated as they have brought attention to significant issues on both high school and college campuses including domestic violence. Students enjoy having their peers in a position to help determine rules, regulations, and needed changes at the school.

Many individuals who participate in student government are very exciting about the work they do. It is often a stepping stone to other leadership roles they will have in the future. These can include volunteering for non-profit organizations, getting a job with a leadership role, or even working in the area of politics.

Student government gives those who participate a chance to experience the process of serving the people for the good of everyone. It also gives them an insight of how the process for democracy and change can be implemented on a variety of levels.
