School sports are a great way for students to get involved and to learn to interact with others. The most popular school sport is football as it seems most everyone in the school is either on the team or comes to the home games to cheer the team on. Basketball for both boys and girls is also quite popular.
For girls there is volleyball which can be a very challenging and fast paced sport. Towards the end of the year students can participate track or cross country. Some schools also offer wrestling. Let’s not forget cheerleading though as it is a time consuming sport that most girls desperately want to be a part of.
There is plenty of school rivalry when it comes to school sports. Most of it is done in the name of school spirit such as during homecoming time. School sports do take up a great deal of time when you consider practices and games. Students have to learn how to juggle their academics with their sports schedules. This is a good way to learn to prioritize and to balance your responsibilities.
While many students would rather focus on their school sports than their academics there are preventions to this in most school systems. To prevent the top football player from graduating but not knowing how to read there are eligibility guidelines in place. The specifics of them vary but in most instances the grades of the players are given to the coach on a weekly basis.
If the player has any F’s they aren’t eligible to play games until the next eligibility period. Some schools also implement the rule that if a student has a D in two classes or in one class for two weeks in a row they are ineligible for that week. Very few players are happy with practicing and then having to sit on the bench for the games.
School sports can be a great way to develop athlete abilities and also manage your school academics. Many students are able to get sports scholarships to college to assist them with the expense. This can be a great way to fund your education. College sports are often where scouts come to look for players that may one day move on to the professional leagues as well.
