Getting ones ears pierced is recorded as the oldest method of altering the body in some way. While it doesn’t seem significant to be categorized in that manner wearing earrings wasn’t always the cultural norm as it is today. Many individuals felt those with earrings were evil and took part in witchcraft.
While they certainly didn’t have the same methods for piercing them as we have today, there are cave drawings back to the time of the early Greeks that feature individuals wearing earrings.
Earrings are very popular in our society for women of all ages. The majority of young girls wear fun earrings that feature their birthstone or other various designs. While the styles of earrings have changes dramatically over the years there are some classic ones that never go out of style. They also seem to be the most expensive ones! Diamonds, pearls, and gold earrings are always in style and well received by those who get them.
Earrings aren’t reserved just for women in our society though. It is common for males to wear one earring. It is generally worn in the right ear. Some males wear their earrings everywhere they go but others remove them when they are at work due to the standards of their employer.
Earrings are made from various materials including metal, plastic, glass, and precious gems. The materials that are used to make the earrings determine the price of them. Earrings can be of different weights. Some people find wearing heavy earrings makes their ears hurt and gives them headaches. Over a long period of time this can cause the earlobes to stretch out as well.
In some cultures getting your ears pierced is a cultural thing. In the country of India all children have their ears pierced before they are five years of age. All types of ear piercing are done in order to be able to insert either posts or wires. Most earrings require a clasp that fits the post or the wire to hold it into place securely.
For those who aren’t sure they want to place holes in their ears or whose parents won’t allow it there are some alternatives. Clip on earrings and magnetic earrings both look real but they are held in place without having to have a hole put into the ear. |
