Car Maintenance Articles - Brake Checks

Your brakes are a very important part of your vehicle. Not only do they need to be able to stop your car at stoplights and stop signs they need to be good enough to stop your car in a split second in the event of an accident about to happen. Your need to take the time to routinely check your brakes so that you know they are reliable when you are on the road. If you don’t then it could result in an accident where you or other people are at risk.

Checking your brakes includes checking to see if you have enough brake fluid. You can check the brake fluid while your vehicle is completed cooled down. There is a lid with a stick attached to it. Check your owner’s manual to find out how full the brake fluid should be. This isn’t very expensive so make sure you buy a good quality brand that is going to work well for your vehicle.

The thickness of your brake pads can tell you a great deal about the life you have left in your breaks. As the pads get thinner you will need to start preparing to have them replaced. If you allow the brake pads to get too thin it can cause damage to the rotors. Never let the pad size get below an 1/8” or you are just asking for trouble. Check the brake disc for grooves because this can indicate it is time to change the discs.

It is quite simple to check your brakes on your own but if you aren’t comfortable with doing it take your vehicle to a certified repair shop. They will likely charge you very little for this service and it is well worth it to know your vehicle is running it the best condition possible. That may be a good time to have other elements of your vehicle looked over as well.

You should inspect your brakes at least every three months to ensure they are in good working condition. If you put a great deal of miles on your vehicle on a regular basis then you will want to check them more often. Your brakes are one of the most important safety devices on a vehicle so take the time to make sure they are able to offer you all the protection you need.
