Artificial Sweeteners - Sugar Substitutes

A sugar substitute is classified as a food additive that artificially tastes like real sugar. These artificial sweeteners allow individuals to have the same flavor they enjoy without adding all that sugar to their daily intake.

While many sugar substitutes are made to taste like real sugar some people claim they can taste the difference. They don’t like the after taste sugar substitutes leave in their mouth. This often goes away after the artificial sweetener has been used for a while.

The guidelines for sugar substitutes are determined by the Food and Drug Administration. Thorough testing has to be done before a sugar substitute can be approved for consumer use. There are only five sugar substitutes currently on the market but they can be found in hundreds of different products. They include saccharin, aspartame, sucralose, neotame, and acesulfame potassium. Aspartame is the most popular.

Sugar substitutes are a common ingredient in diet soda products. They are becoming more and more popular in various foods and beverages that are for sale. Many manufacturers make versions of the product with the real sugar and with sugar substitutes so that consumers not only have the choice of product but the form they want it in as well. Manufacturers are able to profit from this as well because sugar substitutes cost less than sugar.

The use of sugar substitutes is a personal one for each individual. There are no known health risks to sugar substitutes but some people find that don’t like the taste of certain ones or that their own body chemistry doesn’t allow it to process well. If you are looking for the sugar substitute product that works well for you pay attention to the main ingredients. This way you can try a different for of base sugar substitute with the different products instead of the same one over and over again.

Sugar substitutes should be used in moderation though. Consumers are warned that just because it isn’t real sugar that doesn’t give them the ability to consume more than they would if they used real sugar. Sugar substitutes are sweeter so less is needed but that doesn’t justify eating four cupcakes instead of two.
