Artificial Sweeteners - Fructose

Fructose is a type of sugar that is commonly used in foods and beverages to make them have the sweet taste so many of us enjoy. It comes from pure sugar which is called sucrose. Chemically it has the same structure as glucose. It is only the molecular structure that is different.

Doctors often recommend individuals with diabetes refrain from using real sugar as much as possible. You need to beware that fructose may affect your levels of uric acid in the body. It can also cause insulin to be ineffective for individuals with Type I diabetes.

Fructose is often consumed by individuals who want to lose weight. However it is not a good sugar substitute for that. There is plenty of research to indicate that consuming fructose on a regular basis in large quantities can result in obesity. Most fruits and vegetables contain a small amount of fructose which is good for the body. While the body can use fructose as energy it can only use a small amount of it at a time. The remainder of it is stored in the body as fat.

Too much fructose can cause more problems for your body than just weight gain. It has to be processed in the liver but if there is too much for the liver to keep up with the remainder is released into the blood stream. This can cause an increase in blood pressure and they risk of heart disease.

Studies also show fructose sends the wrong messages to our bodies when too much of it is consumed. In addition to the majority of it going to be stored as fat it tells your brain that the body isn’t satisfied with the food intake. This leads people to eat more even though they have already consumed enough food.

Many people don’t pay much attention to the warnings about fructose though because it has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration. Their guidelines indicate that it has to be consumed in moderation though. Such types of food additives affect individuals in different ways so pay attention to how your own body reacts to it.
